How Do I Know if Minoxidil is Working for my Hair Regrowth?

Medically reviewed by Dr Margo Gkini, Consultant Dermatologist, MD, MSc, PhD, FRCP – October 2026
Minoxidil is working if your hair loss begins to stabilise or improve over time. That might mean less shedding, thicker hairs, improved scalp coverage or visible new growth. For some people, simply maintaining their existing hair density rather than continuing to lose it can also be an important sign of success.
But don't expect to see these changes immediately.
Minoxidil results are measured over months rather than weeks, with studies showing measurable improvements in hair count over time.
Here are some of the signs worth looking for.
1. Early Shedding Starts to Settle
It sounds contradictory, but increased shedding can sometimes happen soon after starting minoxidil.
Minoxidil influences the hair growth cycle, which can cause older hairs in the resting phase to shed as follicles transition towards a new growth phase.
If this happens, the important sign isn't necessarily that shedding stops immediately. It's that the initial increase begins to settle as treatment continues.
Early shedding can be unsettling, but it doesn’t automatically mean your treatment isn’t working.
2. You're Losing Less Hair
For some people, one of the first positive changes is simply noticing less hair being shed.
You might see:
Fewer hairs in the shower
Less hair on your pillow
Less hair coming out when brushing or styling
A gradual reduction in excessive daily shedding
However, counting individual shed hairs isn't a reliable way to measure treatment response. Normal shedding varies from day to day, so look for a sustained change rather than judging progress after one shower or hair wash.
3. You Start Seeing Shorter New Hairs
As follicles respond to treatment, new hairs may start to appear in areas affected by thinning.
Initially, these can appear:
Short
Fine
Soft
Less pigmented than surrounding hair
Over time, responding follicles may produce longer, thicker hairs. .
Don't expect these early hairs to transform the appearance of your hair immediately. Hair grows slowly, and new growth needs time to become long and substantial enough to make a visible difference to overall density.
4. Your Hair Starts to Look or Feel Thicker
Another important sign is an improvement in hair thickness and density.
Clinical studies in both men and women have shown improvements in hair growth and scalp coverage compared with topical minoxidil.
In everyday life, that might mean:
Your parting looks slightly narrower
Less scalp is visible in bright light
Your hair feels fuller when styling
Thinning areas appear less obvious in photographs
Your hair has more overall coverage
These changes tend to happen gradually rather than all at once.
5. Your Hair Loss Has Stopped Getting Worse
This is one of the most overlooked signs that treatment may be working.
Male and female pattern hair loss are progressive conditions. Without effective treatment, affected follicles can continue to miniaturise and density can gradually decrease.
So success doesn't always mean dramatic regrowth.
If your hair was becoming progressively thinner before treatment but has remained relatively stable since, maintaining your existing hair may itself be a meaningful result..
Minoxidil isn't only used to encourage regrowth – it can also help manage the ongoing progression of pattern hair loss.
When Should You Expect to See Minoxidil Results?
There isn't one exact timeline that applies to everyone. Hair growth is gradual and everyone’s response is different.
Clinical trials demonstrate that measurable changes can occur within the first few months. For example, studies in men have identified significant increases in hair counts by around 16 weeks, while major trials in both men and women have assessed outcomes over 48 weeks.
A useful way to think about treatment is:
First few months: Your hair cycle is beginning to respond and some people may experience temporary shedding.
Around 3–6 months: Early improvements may become easier to identify.
6–12 months: You’ll have a clearer picture of how well your treatment is working.

The Best Way to Track Minoxidil Results
Don't rely solely on memory or your bathroom mirror.
Hair changes so gradually that it can be surprisingly difficult to remember what your density looked like three or six months earlier.
Instead, take consistent progress photographs.
Try to use the same:
Lighting
Room
Camera
Hair position
Parting
Distance from the camera
Angles
Take photos from the front, top, crown and any relevant areas of thinning you want to track.
Monthly photos are generally more useful than checking every day. Comparing images several months apart makes gradual changes much easier to spot.
What If You're Not Seeing Dramatic Regrowth?
It doesn't necessarily mean minoxidil isn't working.
Everyone responds differently. Your stage of hair loss, consistency of application and whether another condition is contributing to thinning can also affect results.

Importantly, don't increase the amount or frequency of minoxidil yourself in an attempt to accelerate results. More isn't necessarily better. One study comparing 5% and 10% topical minoxidil in men actually found 5% performed better on its primary hair-count measures and caused less irritation.
If progress isn't what you expected, speak to your prescriber so they can review your treatment.

Final Thoughts
So, how do you know if minoxidil is working?
Look for progress over months rather than changes from one week to the next.
Reduced shedding can be encouraging, but so can new hairs, thicker existing hairs, better scalp coverage or simply stopping your hair loss from becoming progressively worse.
Use your treatment consistently, take regular progress photographs and give your hair enough time to respond.
If results still aren't progressing as expected, speak to your prescriber. They can review your results and advise you on what to do next.
